May 31 – Members of the public who saw socialite Bryan White rubbing shoulders with President Museveni and Kyabazinga of Busoga Prince Gabula Nadiope during the Kagulu Hill Challenge on May 26, may not have been aware that he was running from a deep personal crisis.
The money-dishing socialite had suffered deep embarrassment just two weeks earlier when Baganda radicals literally banished him from an event he had sponsored.
Saturday May 12 had started in a high note for the limelight seeking socialite as he headed to the Viper Sports Club Stadium in Kitende where the Kabaka was due to preside over the opening match of the Bika Football Tournament. As self-appointed sponsor of the event, White had organised his usual retinue to add swag to his triumphant arrival at kitende.
Matters took an unexpected turn however when Buganda elders put their foot down and made sure that Mr. White, a socialite of unverified background, was not allowed to get anywhere near the Kabaka.
As the tournament unfolded to popular applause, Bryan White was confined to the backend of the stadium like any commoner. Mr. White had been paraded as the main sponsor of the tournament and was therefore supposed to at least receive a handshake from the King of Buganda, His Royal Highness the Kabaka, Ronald Muwenda Mutebi.
But angry elders intervened just in time and made it clear to organisers that Bryan White, lacked the credentials to enjoy such a privilege.
Keen to avoid public confrontation with the elders, the organisers caved in and threw Bryan White under the bus.
As usual, Bryan White had arrived with swag, branded as official sponsor of the tournament. He was however stopped in his tracks and he was not allowed to distribute his famous Bryan Foundation Tee-Shirts to soccer fans who had turned up for the occasion.
Smarting from that incident, Bryan White has not attended any of the subsequent matches of the Bika tournament. He has completely withdrawn from the social scene, until May 26, when he surfaced at the Kadaga organised Kagulu Hill Challenge to which is reported to have contributed 8 million shillings.
Spear News has learnt that savvy politicians are now exploiting Bryan White’s vain love for the limelight to financially exploit him. Besides Kadaga, the other politician known to have used Byran White is Kampala Ministwer Beti Olive Namisango Kamya.
