1 dead, as fire razes entire Kimi island in lake Victoria


Fire has gutted the entire fishing camp of Kimi island in lake Victoria killing one person and destroying properties worth millions of shilling.

Nakimuli an area resident told this site on phone that fire started at around 2:00am and spread to the entire camp within 30 minutes. The camp stretches for about a kilometre wide.


Residents attempts to put off the fire was futile as it engulfed the entire makeshifts at the same time. Currently all people are seeking survivors and valuable properties from the rubles.

residents are searching for 3 missing children from the rubles.


It is estimated that properties worth million of shillings especially household, business and fishing utilities have been destroyed in the fire.


Kimi Island, is the biggest and most populated camp in lake Victoria, found in Koome sub-county Mukono district. It is mostly occupied by fishermen and people doing other businesses.

Last year, a land wrangle was reported in the island were ‘white’ investors claimed ownership of the entire land and wanted to chase off all resident occupants.
