UPDF soldier dies, 2 others injured in fatal Bodaboda accident

A Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) soldier attached to 407 Brigade in Nakapiripirit district has died in an accident involving a motorcycle and a lorry.


Corporal Emmanuel Lokiru died moments after he was rushed to Moroto Regional referral hospital. Lokiru was carrying his three colleagues from the local defence unit on a bajaj, UEO 078T when he rammed into the lorry registration number UAY 893P at Nadunget junction, 10 kilometres from Moroto town. The accident occurred a few minutes after 1pm.


Peter Ongwara, the Moroto district police commander says the soldiers were riding from Nakapiripirit side when they rammed into the lorry heading to Napak. He notes that preliminary findings indicate that the rider failed to control the bike.


Ongwara identifies the other victims as Charles Nangoya, Emmanuel Onyang and Lokol Lotuke- all attached to different Local Defence Units in Nakapiripirit.


Sam Ogong, the officer in charge traffic in Moroto attributes the accident to reckless riding and overloading.


He notes that the driver of the truck, George William Sekimwanyi, has recorded a statement as police continues with investigations.


Lt Wilson Agaba Kato, the third Division spokesman says the soldiers were travelling to Moroto to withdraw money.
