Why a Muntu victory is good for Besigye’s continued relevance in FDC

Its Defiance verses Compliance in the ongoing campaigns for the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) Party boss elections.

Gen. Mugisha Muntu who believes in compliance is facing three other contenders but the main challenger being former legislator Patrick Amuriat Oboi (POA) who represents Dr. Kizza Besigye’s style of politics.

Besigye/ POA camp is accusing Gen. Muntu of not delivering on his promises of building party structures, mobilisation and killing the activism brand which has weakened the party.

Muntu’s camp is opposed to full scale activism, to him it’s through organization and mobilization that president Museveni can be dislodged and this has created a conflict that has forced both camps to trade accusations and go personal.

Centenary Robert, MP for Kasese shares the view and argues that activism must be directed not aimless because FDC is built as an institution on Value systems and by people.

“Activism is not an end in itself; it requires building structures and organization because even if we took power right now and we are not organized, we will be removed from power because of internal differences. Building structures doesn’t come overnight, it’s a process and Muntu has tried.

We need to organize ourselves such that by the time we form government, everyone has hope and trust that we will deliver them to the Promised Land,” Centenary noted.

According to analysts, if Muntu wins, Dr. Kizza Besigye will still benefit directly because he will have a chance to out shine him by engaging in his activism.

In this way Besigye will stay alive politically and win the party ticket for presidential candidate in the next presidential elections.

Currently, Muntu has FDC leaders especially parliamentarians who have resorted to taking things slow by building structures, and Besigye has FDC activists and hearts of Ugandans who desire change.

To Elijah Okupa, MP for Kasiro County the divisions in the party are worrying and colleagues should desist from this.

“We can’t afford to tear the party into because of Compliance or defiance, what about supporters who are neutral, we need to end this and we embrace the winner as one family,” Okupa added.

Salam Musumba , FDC National Chairperson for Eastern region stated that this race is not about POA but the political future of FDC because NRM promised to finish them off,  adding that it’s time to stop talking and start acting.

In this race, incumbent FDC President Mugisha Muntu faces three other candidates Patrick Amuriat Oboi, the former Kumi County Member of Parliament, MP Mubarak Munyagwa and youthful Moses Byamugisha.
