Local gov’t workers’ Union threaten to strike

The Uganda local government workers Union (UGLWU) has warned of a pending strike against if their salaries are not raised.
The Union says that they are facing discrimination by government for is their employer and although they had issued a 90 day Ultimatum, it is expiring without receiving any official communication from the government warning of not extending the deadline.
This was revealed in a letter signed by Hassan Lwabayi to the Prime Minister and public service, dated 29th August 2017. It states that salary structures of Bank of Uganda, KCCA, URA are discriminative which is not only unconstitutional but also illegal.
According to this letter, it was agreed in the Union’s meeting that the minimum salary which is U8, increased from Uganda shillings 187660 to 1,7600,000.
This comes at a time when the judicial officers in the country are on a strike which has paralyzed court business.
It’s at this point that MPs advised government to speed up a review of all civil servants salaries for a lasting solution to strikes that are affecting service delivery.
