Bishop Mwesigwa: Some Religious Leaders have Lost Direction

Rt. Reverend Dr. Sheldon Mwesigwa, the Bishop of Ankole Diocese, says that some Ugandans have lost trust in the clergy, because of the conduct of some religious leaders.

He adds that there is need for religious leaders to clean up irrespective of where they belong.

Dr. Mwesigwa hailed efforts by the Inter Religious Council of Uganda and Directorate of Ethics to address some of the issues raised against some religious leaders such as extortion and cheating of believers among other things.

He revealed this while speaking a consultative meeting on national dialogue for religious leaders drawn from Ankole region held at Oxford Inn in Mbarara on Wednesday. The meeting was organised by the Inter Religious Council of Uganda and the Great Lakes Institute for strategic Studies.

Speaking at the same meeting, Joshua Kitakule, the Secretary General Inter Religious Council of Uganda-IRCU, said it is high time religious leaders start doing research and find out the issues affecting the people they serve if they are to remain relevant.

Ely Muhwezi, the Executive Director Mbarara Civil society and Nongovernmental Organization’s Forum, says it is key to engage religious leaders in the development of Uganda as well as ensuring harmony among citizens.
