South Sudan war: Salva Kiir declares 3-month state of emergency

South Sudan president Salva Kiir has declared a 3 months state of emergency in parts of the country.

The president made the announcement Monday night, though he did not give clear reasons for the sudden decision.

The state of emergency according to Radio Tamazuj was declared in Gogrial, and parts of Tonj, Wau and Aweil East.

The move is suspected to be attached to the unrest in the countries northwest regions.

On the same day, Kiir’s government shutdown news websites he accused of “hostile” reporting and blocked.

Last week the head of South Sudan Broadcasting Corporation also was arrested for failing to air Kiir’s independent day speech

The declaration comes amidst a deepening conflict and humanitarian catastrophe in the world’s youngest nation.
