SPLA-IO launch campaign to end Machar's detention in South Africa

South Sudanese rebels abroad have launched a media campaign calling on the international community to end Riek Machar’s forced confinement in South Africa.

Lam Paul Gabriel the SPLA-IO deputy military spokesperson told media that the campaign was initiated by their political leaders to urge the international community to end Machar’s forced exile in South Africa so that he can be part of the peace process in the country.

He added that Riek Machar is the only person who can declare ceasefire with the Juba government and there cant be no peace with him in detention.

Machar is on forced home detention in South Africa since October 2016 where he traveled to for medical attention at the height of renewed fighting in his country.

IGAD countries enforced this detention with a hope of preventing renewed fighting which didnt work

William Gatjiath  the SPLA-IO military spokesman last week called called to IGAD countries to end Riek Machar’s exile for rebels to reciprocate the unilateral ceasefire declared by President Salva Kiir in May

“We are not part of the ceasefire declared by Kiir because it a ceasefire between the government and Taban Deng who claims that he is the leader of SPLA-IO,” said Gatjiath.
