South Sudan: Gov't cancels independence day celebrations


South Sudan,government has cancelled its official July 9th independence day celebrations for the second year running.


Announcing the cancellation Michael Makuei the government spokesman said SSD has nothing to celebrate in ‘independence’


“We are not celebrating… because our situation does not require us to celebrate at a time when there are people in need of these funds,”


 


Last year’s independence day celebrations were also cancelled due to violent clashes in the capital Juba between President Salva Kiir and former deputy Reik Machar’s forces.


South Sudan split from Sudan on July 9, 2011 but has been engulfed by civil war since 2013.
